Dermatology Residency Overview

The Department of Dermatology Residency Program has three primary objectives:

  1. To recruit the best qualified applicants
  2. To train excellent clinicians
  3. To produce leaders in dermatology

Hands-on Experience

UT Southwestern Medical Center is the first of only two accredited dermatology residency programs in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. It utilizes five teaching centers (Parkland Health & Hospital System, Children's Healthâ„  Children's Medical Center, UT Southwestern University Hospitals, and the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center), and two dermatopathology groups (Cockerell Dermatopathology and Propath), collectively serving a large population of patients with diverse genetic and social backgrounds in a variety of health care settings.

Several general dermatology clinics and subspecialty clinics treat a wide variety of conditions and provide a variety of services, including: blistering diseases, contact allergy, cosmetic dermatology, dermatopathology, hair/nail disorders, pediatric dermatology, pharmaceutical studies, pigment cell disorders, rheumatic skin disease, surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery, and vascular malformation/laser surgery.

Our faculty combines mastery of general dermatology with expertise in defined dermatological subspecialties.

Guiding Principles

  • To promote excellence and leadership, our residents consistently rank among the top of their peer groups as noted in the American Board of Dermatology Certifying and In-Training Examinations. Half of our graduates train further in fellowship programs. A survey of careers of graduates from 2006 to 2012 show 80 percent are on academic faculty full or part-time.
  • To blend medical and surgical training.
  • To provide an interactive, cooperative, and supportive environment.
  • To encourage mentorship and camaraderie.
