Student Organizations

Global Health Interest Group (GHIG)

GHIG aims to inspire the UTSW medical community to pursue global health with collaboration, mindfulness, and advocacy. We seek to educate students and faculty about global health issues and to promote ethical, sustainable, community-driven research and service.

Global Surgery Student Alliance (GSSA)

GSSA publicly advocates for the global surgery field and its need for more volunteers. It was established to develop and mentor future surgeons, anesthesiologists, and obstetricians of the world.

The Alliance aims to:

  • Provide timely and affordable access to surgical care around the world.
  • Advance education and research about global surgery.
  • Address challenges of providing sustainable care in low-resource settings.

Refugee Health Interest Group (RHIG)

The Refugee Health Interest Group (RHIG) was founded in 2023 to serve as a resource for students to become actively involved in furthering community service efforts for refugees, asylum seekers, and other marginalized immigrant communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. By forming partnerships with local refugee resettlement agencies, RHIG aims to directly serve this community and establish a firm base of future health professionals who are aware of the challenges marginalized communities face in accessing healthcare and motivated to improve health equity for refugee populations.

Home & Abroad

Founded in fall 2015, Home and Abroad is an annual global health publication by medical students at UT Southwestern Medical Center. It was established to share ideas, inform discussions, and inspire action on issues of global health importance. Our mission is to provide a varied perspective on global health endeavors, initiatives and achievements by the student body, faculty, and friends; and to promote ideas, innovations, and advancements with medical applications locally and globally. Our goal is to become the premier literary forum utilizing multidisciplinary approaches to address challenges in global medicine by proving our readers insightful and accurate information on pertinent global health topics.
