Scholarly Activity

Scholarly activity is a vital component of the curriculum at UT Southwestern Medical School, reflecting our commitment to providing students with diverse opportunities for growth and career development. It fosters skills in scholarly inquiry grounded in ethical principles and focuses on the discovery and communication of new knowledge. Among the six scholarly activity tracks offered, the Global Health Track is an option.

Beginning in January of the clerkship period, students can engage in a 12-week Scholarly Activity in the Global Health Track. Students have the flexibility to conduct their research either locally or internationally. We recommend that students spend at least eight weeks abroad working on their projects and the remaining time for data analysis and final summaries. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Planning should begin 6 months in advance.

This course provides students with the skills to conduct comprehensive global health research and includes:

  • Formulating and Designing Research Topics: Develop a global health research topic, design a feasible study, and implement it with faculty mentorship.
  • Conducting and Analyzing Research: Gain hands-on experience from conceptualizing ideas to data analysis and manuscript writing.
  • Understanding Global Health Outcomes: Learn the conceptual, methodological, and empirical foundations for assessing health outcomes globally.
  • Applying Medical Knowledge: Address critical clinical and public health issues with ethical and culturally competent approaches.

This course offers an in-depth exploration of global health research processes and practices, equipping students to make meaningful contributions to the field.
