Dr. Priyanka Gaur came from a family of engineers on her father’s side and doctors on her mother’s. She headed off to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for college thinking she would explore engineering, but her desire to care for patients led her to medicine instead.

For his research on Toxoplasma, Michael Reese, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Biochemistry, has received the Burroughs Wellcome Fund’s Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Award. The award provides $500,000 over five years to support investigators at the assistant professor level to shed light on how human and microbial systems are affected by their encounters.

Rodney Infante, M.D., Ph.D., was struck by the plight of the 30-50% of solid tumor patients who suffer from cachexia. Not only was their quality of life seriously diminished by rapid weight loss and muscle wasting, but they were often deemed ineligible for standard-of-care treatments, adding insult to injury. Since no one understood what causes cachexia, Dr. Infante decided to tackle it. Less than 10 years later, he is close to beginning a phase 1 trial on a possible solution.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Bridge Program, which was created to increase the number of Black, Latino, and Indigenous students earning doctorates in chemistry, has named UT Southwestern as the first academic medical center in the nation to serve as a Bridge Site.

The state of Texas saw potential in the School of Public Health from the start, appropriating $10 million in startup funds. It had one caveat, however: UT Southwestern would be asked to match those funds 2-to-1 with private contributions. With recent gifts totaling more than $106 million, UTSW has met the $20 million goal and more.

For her research, Ms. Chen received the 2022 Nominata Award, the highest honor for academic and research accomplishment bestowed by UT Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Heakyung Kim, M.D., a physician-investigator known for research and treatment of cerebral palsy in children, has been appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). Dr. Kim, who joined UTSW on May 1, holds the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Chair in Mobility Research.
