Medical School graduation – a milestone for new physicians signifying the completion of four dedicated years of intense learning and clinical experience – took on a more sobering tone this year in light of COVID-19. Because of the ongoing pandemic and Dallas County rules restricting large gatherings, UT Southwestern Medical School leadership made the tough decision to hold a virtual Commencement ceremony for the 226 graduates of the Class of 2020.

On Jan. 21, UT Southwestern held its 58th annual Medical Student Research Forum, which encourages students’ interest in pursuing professional research.

Drs. Favela and Argo, who met at UT Southwestern, were hoping to match to the same place. Medical students who go through the match process with their significant other have the option to link their match lists in the National Resident Matching Program. The couple, who became engaged in October, were among seven medical interns from across the U.S. selected for the University of Wisconsin’s general surgery residency program on Match Day a year ago.

Professor Emeritus Dr. Phillip Eugene Jones, who led the Physician Assistant Studies Program in UT Southwestern’s School of Health Professions for more than two decades, has been recognized with a new Professorship in his honor.

When Dr. Daniela Nicastro was recruited to UT Southwestern in 2015 to build a state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy (EM) facility, she was charged with designing climate-controlled, low-vibration EM suites, purchasing instruments, training staff, and securing additional funding. UTSW’s cryo-EM facility opened in 2016, giving researchers access to instruments that can record images of proteins, macromolecular complexes, and cells with up to atomic resolution. To meet campus demand, the facility started to expand last year.

Dr. Roberts learned how to tackle patient care improvement projects as a medical student at UT Southwestern through the M.D. with Distinction in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (MDD) program. It’s one of five Distinction tracks available for medical students to earn with their degree at UTSW.

The Biochemistry Department’s Post-Baccalaureate Program gives students from underrepresented minority groups support to pursue a career in science, said Uttam Tambar, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry, Director of Diversity for Biochemistry, and Chair of the Organic Chemistry Ph.D. Program in the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The goal is to increase diversity among students and faculty involved in biochemistry and chemistry research.
