October 24 marks the100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Donald Seldin. Having recently published a biography about the iconic Dallas physician – Donald Seldin: The Maestro of Medicine – I confess that he continues to live in my mind more than two years after he passed away. For those who were privileged to study under him or know him personally, Dr. Seldin was a towering figure. It is not an exaggeration to assert that he transformed an institution, nurtured generations of physicians, and enriched his community almost without parallel in the history of modern medicine.

Edith Jones O’Donnell, renowned for her commitment to arts and education and a pivotal figure in helping transform UT Southwestern Medical Center through extraordinary support from the O’Donnell Foundation she founded with husband Peter O’Donnell, Jr., passed away on Nov. 14. She was 94. Together and through the Foundation they established in 1957, Edith and Peter O’Donnell have supported some of the most innovative and impactful programs at the Medical Center.

Match Day 2019: Student spotlights

The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at UT Southwestern received more than $5 million in research funding in the latest round of grants awarded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

Four years into a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine (IEEM), the research team has some ground-breaking preliminary findings. Unfortunately, the study has come to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and without 15 more children – new research participants – the study findings may never see the light of day.

The UT Southwestern SACNAS chapter received a 2021 SACNAS Chapter Award in recognition of its dedication to science, education, and professional development. UTSW was one of seven chapters honored with the national award.

In conjunction with Division of Pediatric Critical Care Chief Jessica Moreland, M.D., and the Moreland lab, Dr. Nichols’ latest study, published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, investigated why some children with Type 1 diabetes develop a complication called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

UT Southwestern is one of the few medical schools in the U.S. with such an expansive 3D model development operation, allowing creation of specialized plastic body parts and tissue – simulated bones, ears, hands, and more – using six 3D printing machines.

Michael Trinh, the child of Vietnam War refugees, is the first graduate student from UT Southwestern to receive a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and one of 30 recipients nationwide. The fellowship will support his research on how cholesterol is transported inside human cells.

In response to a statewide need for more psychiatric beds and with financial support from the Texas Legislature, UT Southwestern has begun planning DFW’s first state-funded psychiatric hospital.
