UTSW pediatric surgeon receives prestigious Piper Professor Award

UT Southwestern researchers using advanced microscopes have shown how a lipid that regulates development of the heart, nerves, and immune system is exported out of cells so it can do its job. Knowing the structure of this fat molecule bound to its transporter protein holds promise for someday improving treatments for lung cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), and other diseases, according to Xiaochun Li, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and Biophysics.

Many winners of the Nominata Award – the highest honor bestowed upon a Ph.D. student of UT Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – have gone on to lead esteemed biomedical careers that progressed from postdoctoral researcher to academic or industry scientist to professor or division leader.

Yet they all come together like the well-rehearsed musicians of an orchestra to make UT Southwestern perform as one of the best places in the country to receive medical care.
