Mr. Davis, hired as Associate Vice President of Information Security and Chief Information Security Officer for UT Southwestern in December, has visited with many departments since his arrival to broaden his knowledge of the campus, the staff working behind the scenes, and how information security enables UT Southwestern’s core missions.

Each day, vehicles pull up to white tents erected outside the Bass Administrative and Clinical Center as patients arrive for COVID-19 testing. When the windows roll down, UT Southwestern nurses and staff do all they can to communicate empathy and quiet confidence through shielded eyes to ease the apprehension they can often see and feel.

For every path we choose, there is a “why” we set out on it – a person who inspired us, a moment that defined our choices, a consideration that set us in the direction we chose to walk. In celebration of Nurses Week, May 6-12, we reached out to a cross-section of UT Southwestern nurses who work every day to embody the institution’s values of excellence, innovation, teamwork, and compassion as they care for UTSW patients and contribute to important research. We asked each to share their personal “why” with us. They filmed and penned the following responses to inspire our community.

When you are running out of a product, wouldn’t it be nice if you could just make more of your own? That’s what two organic chemists at UT Southwestern did when hand sanitizer fell into short supply as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the country. Now the lab-produced sanitizer is helping keep hands germ-free for UT Southwestern caregivers and staff.

Mandell Butler Jr. doesn’t just support his patients as a nurse practitioner; he also serves his country as a lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve. Because his supervisors at UT Southwestern make that combination easier, he nominated two of them to receive Patriot Awards.

The UT Southwestern Medical Center Autopsy division helps answer the cause and manner of death and advance our understanding of disease.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, Ms. Hernandez, MBA, B.S.N., RN, delivered her annual message to hundreds of nurses and medical professionals via livestream on May 8. The event took place during National Nurses Week, the American Nurses Association’s weeklong celebration that honors nurses’ contributions to society each year from May 6 to May 12. Her remarks coincided with the World Health Organization’s designation of 2020 as Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and touched on topics like nurse resiliency.

UT Southwestern faculty members Philip Greilich, M.D., M.Sc., and Janine Prange-Kiel, Ph.D., have been selected to join the UT System’s Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education in recognition of their outstanding teaching. New members will be inducted at the Academy’s annual Innovations in Health Science Education Conference, scheduled Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Austin.
