UT Southwestern researchers used cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine the near-atomic structure of the smallest membrane protein solved to date. Their work could lead to better immunotherapies in cancer and improved treatments for autoimmune diseases like lupus.

Mr. Du is a fifth-year graduate student in the UT Southwestern laboratory of Dr. Zhijian “James” Chen – Director of the Center for Inflammation Research, Professor of Molecular Biology, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. Mr. Du recently presented the Nominata Lecture, describing his work on innate immunity to an audience of faculty members and fellow graduate students. Traditionally, that talk is the final one in the University Lecture Series attended by the University’s top researchers.

UT Southwestern organic chemist Dr. Uttam Tambar has been awarded the 2019 Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research. The prize recognizes his work using synthetic chemistry to build complex biologically active molecules and to streamline pharmaceutical production.

UT Southwestern is one of five North Texas health care systems recognized as “Most Wired” by the Dr. John C. Vanatta III spent more than 50 years of his career as a physiology professor at UT Southwestern. He lived during a divisive time in our nation’s history, but he strongly believed in unity and inclusion. In 1999, he established the Vanatta Scholarship Fund for African-American Medical Students.
