UTSW honors Dr. King’s life and legacy in annual MLK celebration

Despite a return to normalcy not happening in 2021, UT Southwestern’s faculty, staff, students, and trainees were unstoppable, embracing a new reality.

Introduced as “an amazing scientist, a phenomenal mentor, and a role model,” Susan J. Fisher, Ph.D., inspired women in the audience when she spoke recently at UT Southwestern as the 2019 Ida M. Green Distinguished Visiting Professor Honoring Women in Science and Medicine.

Celebrated viral immunologist Dr. Kizzmekia S. Corbett, who was at the forefront of developing what became the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, provided insight into its creation and rapid deployment during a virtual presentation at the 2021 Ida M. Green Lecture Honoring Women in Science and Medicine. Currently one of the nation’s most in-demand speakers, Dr. Corbett described how the candidate vaccine, in just a few months, went from scientific concept at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to national distribution of a two-dose regimen that has shown to be more than 90 percent effective.

Dr. Thomas A. LaVeist, Dean of the Tulane University School of Public Health, is the keynote speaker for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration to be held virtually on Jan. 20. He is a leading researcher on the topic of health disparities, health policy, and the utilization of health services in the United States.
