This past year offered more proof of that impact, including approval of a first-in-kind drug to treat a rare autoimmune disease that evolved from UTSW basic research to a finding that mechanical hearts can spur regeneration in dormant parts of failing hearts.

Despite a return to normalcy not happening in 2022, UT Southwestern’s faculty, staff, students, and trainees were unstoppable, embracing a new reality.

Three new facilities opened or broke ground to enhance care options for patients, including construction of The Texas Behavioral Health Center at UT Southwestern in December, addition of a new facility to treat cancer patients in November, and opening of UT Southwestern Medical Center at RedBird in August.
