Kane to hold Crystal Charity Ball Distinguished Chair

Dr. Alex A. Kane, Professor of Plastic Surgery, has been appointed to hold the Crystal Charity Ball Distinguished Chair in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Kane, who is also Division Director of Pediatric and Craniofacial Surgery at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2010.

He completed residencies in general and plastic surgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis before being selected for a concentrated fellowship in cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery at Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital in China and a secondary fellowship in craniofacial imaging at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr. Kane, who has participated in many charitable surgical missions to Asia under the auspices of Smile Train and the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, has written more than 60 research articles and book chapters on plastic and craniofacial subjects. He frequently lectures and presents research at national and international medical symposia. Deborah Spitzer, MSN, RN, OCN, SCC Clinical Nurse Educator, has received the 2016 Dallas Chapter Oncology Nursing Society's Founders Award, which is the chapter’s most esteemed honor.

Ms. Spitzer was nominated and chosen by her nursing peers throughout the Dallas area for being an advocate for patients and their families, providing access to the health care system, and serving as a role model for the nursing profession. She received the award in late January.

“Deb continually promotes and encourages staff nurses, and works diligently to improve patient care and outcomes,” said Victoria England, MBA, BSN, RN, NE-BC, and Magnet Program Director, Office of Nurse Excellence at UT Southwestern. “Deb brings a passion to oncology nursing that she passes on to those around her.”

One of her colleagues, Kavitha Nair, BSN, RN, OCN, Manager, BMT/Medical Oncology at Clements University Hospital, says Ms. Spitzer is known to nurses as the key person to help get oncology nurses certified.

“Her contributions to the profession and community are countless,” Ms. Nair said. “They include facilitating student internships for oncology, developing a certification course, and collaborating with community organizations to support families.”
