Guidelines for Flu or COVID

Fever

Defined as temperature higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

If your fever is higher than 100.4 Fahrenheit

If your fever is > 100.4 F:

  • Stop patient activities
  • Notify your supervisor
  • Go home

When you have been fever free for 24 hours without taking fever reducing medication such as Tylenol or Motrin

Symptoms without fever

  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal congestion/runny nose
  • Myalgia (body aches)

If you work on a high-risk unit* or with immunocompromised patients and have
ONE or more symptoms from the left column

OR

If you work on another unit and have TWO or more symptoms from the left column

If you work on a high-risk unit* or with immunocompromised patients and have ONE or more of the symptoms from the left column

OR

work on another unit and have TWO or more symptoms from the left column:

  • Stop patient activities
  • Don mask
  • Notify supervisor
  • Go home

> 24 hours after onset of symptoms

AND

Symptoms have significantly improved

Wear a mask if you have residual symptoms. Practice cough etiquette, hand and respiratory hygiene.

Symptoms with fever
(Presumed influenza)

  • Fever > 100.4° F
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal congestion/runny nose
  • Myalgia (body aches)

If you have had a positive flu test

OR

If your temperature is higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit and you have at least one of the symptoms from the left column.

If you have a fever > 100.4 F and have at least ONE of the symptoms to the left:

  • Stop patient activities
  • Don mask
  • Notify supervisor
  • Go Home

Isolate until you have been fever free for 24 hrs. without taking fever reducing medication

AND

Symptoms have significantly improved

Wear a mask if you have residual symptoms. Practice cough etiquette, hand and respiratory hygiene.

Symptoms with or without fever due to COVID-19

  • Fever > 100.4° F
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal congestion/runny nose
  • Myalgia (body aches)

If you have had a positive COVID-19 test and one of the symptoms from the left column

OR

You have had a positive COVID-19 test and are asymptomatic

If you have a positive COVID-19 test and/or have a fever > 100.4 F and have at least ONE of the symptoms to the left:

  • Stop patient activities
  • Don mask
  • Notify supervisor
  • Go Home

At least five days after onset of symptoms, fever free for 24 hours without taking fever reducing medications

AND

Symptoms have significantly improved**

Mask must be worn for 5 days after you return to work. Practice cough etiquette, hand and respiratory hygiene.

  • Wash your hands often with hand sanitizer or soap and water. Use disinfectant wipes to clean frequently touched surfaces (e.g. keyboards, phones, desks, and work surfaces).
  • *High risk units (NICU, BMT, Transplant units/clinics).
  • **If you tested NEGATIVE for Influenza A & B and /or COVID-19, then you may return to work after you have been fever-free for 24 hours without antipyretics and your symptoms have significantly improved.
  • **If you test positive for COVID-19, notify your leadership team right away. Stay home and isolate from Day 0 (symptom onset) through Day 5. On Day 6, check the flu/COVID grid to see if you can return to campus. Following these guidelines is essential to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for everyone.
