Night/Weekend Call Obligations & Schedule

While being “on call” is an integral part of urology residency training and independent practice after training, we realize that the physical, mental, and emotional burden of night call can be burdensome. Thus, we have established a call schedule which is tailored to the needs, pace, and geography of each rotation, designed in a manner which will maximize the educational value for the resident while strictly adhering to work-hour regulations. Details of the call schedule for each practice location are listed below.

Each “in-house” call night is followed with a “post-call” day off, starting immediately after morning hand-off, no later than 10 a.m. For years PGY 2-4, 60% of rotations are spent in the combined Clements University Hospital and Parkland call pool. These hospitals are about 1 mile apart with convenient parking while on call. In-house call at Clements/Parkland is fast-paced and high volume, but call is infrequent.

“Home-call” nights are not followed by a scheduled day off. However, when emergencies dictate return to the hospital for much of the night, residents are excused from clinical duties the next morning, as needed, to ensure patient and resident safety.
