Pathology

The Once Upon a Time Human Genomics Center at UT Southwestern is an integral component of the Department of Pathology’s Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship. The fellowship is a 1-year, ACGME-accredited program wherein fellows rotate through clinical laboratories at the UTSW BioCenter (next generation sequencing, molecular diagnostics, HLA, DNA arrays and cytogenetics) and Children’s Health. The laboratories receive solid and hematopoietic tumor, infectious disease, transplant, and clinical genetics cases for testing by real-time PCR, fragment analysis, Sanger sequencing, next generation sequencing, primer extension mutation analysis, DNA arrays, FISH, and traditional PCR. The fellowship also includes rotations in clinical genetics at Children’s Health and the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and, where applicable, in anatomic pathology at William P. Clements, Jr. University Hospital. Fellows are eligible to sit for the ABP-ABMG Molecular Genetic Pathology board certification examination.

The curriculum educates fellows in molecular and clinical genetics through assay development and troubleshooting, specimen sign-out, lab management, clinical consultation and direct patient contact. Fellows participate in a year-long lecture series, journal clubs, and molecular and clinical conferences, and can attend research and clinical seminars that fit their interests. They also have numerous opportunities to teach pathology residents and interact with fellows in other disciplines. Engagement in translational or clinical research projects is strongly encouraged. Applicants should be board-eligible or certified in AP and/or CP or Medical Genetics.

Bioinformatics

The UTSW Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics has monthly educational seminars, weekly training sessions and intensive workshops (“nanocourses”) designed to equip faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and research assistants with high-throughput data analysis techniques. The Bioinformatics Fellows Program is designed to provide trainees in traditional biology laboratories at UTSW with a foundational network of bioinformatics colleagues, mentors, and resources.
