Family and Community Medicine
Welcome to the Department of Family and Community Medicine! We are a cohesive group of clinicians, educators, and scholars who strive to deliver outstanding care to all our patients, improve the way primary care is provided, and educate excellent family physicians for the next generation. We have two residency training sites, four ambulatory practices, and provide inpatient care at Parkland Memorial and Dallas Presbyterian hospitals. Our physicians also provide care in nursing homes, in hospice and palliative care settings, and in sleep and sports medicine.
Coordinating Care
In the health care arena, the family physician serves as a patient's "quarterback" through managing day-to-day and overall care. Should the need arise, family physicians can coordinate and advocate for the services of specialists such as cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons, dermatologists, pulmonologists, oncologists, or any other type of specialist. Our faculty members have daily working relationships with hundreds of specialists at UT Southwestern affiliated hospitals. Every day, we are enhancing the discipline of family medicine by training future family physicians and by finding better ways to deliver health services.
Vision
Create a strong, nationally recognized department that contributes significant knowledge to the discipline, trains outstanding family physicians and other learners in an inclusive environment, attracts excellent medical students to become family physicians, and strengthens the community we serve.
Mission
To train a distinguished cohort of culturally competent family physicians to care for a variety of populations throughout North Texas, including the underserved. This training includes evidence-based, academicaly rigorous clinical care and engagement in clinical and community participatory research that positively impacts patient outcomes.
Honoring Dr. Amer Shakil
About Amer Shakil, M.D.
Dr. Shakil was a long-time faculty in The Department of Family and Community Medicine. He spent more than 25 years at UT Southestern educating medical students and residents, caring for patients, and conducting research. He was a tireless advocate for the advancement of Family Medicine and he made an indelible mark on the many students, residents and faculty that he mentored.
The Amer Shakil, M.D. Endowment Fund
To honor Dr. Shakil's legacy, we have launched a campaign to establish an endowment fund in his name. Our department will match donations up to $50,000. It is our hope that this fund will help support our department's research efforts, training, and work in the community, as well as inspire future generations of family physicians.
