Psoas (pronounced SO-as) are a pair of large muscles that run from the lumbar spine through the groin on both sides of the body.  It is shown in red on the picture below.

These muscles allow your body to walk, run, bend over, stand, and sit.  When you are seated these muscles shorten and when you stand they lengthen.

Spending a lot of time seated can cause these muscles to get out of whack.  Luckily there are ways to stretch and strengthen the psoas.

At UT Southwestern, your mental health matters. If you are feeling overwhelmed or simply want to have a mental health check-in, consider using the interactive screening program UTSW Cares for You. This secure and confidential resource helps you navigate stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, and any other concerns you may be currently facing that impact your well-being.

The tool, which offers anonymity, allows faculty, staff, and graduate students to complete a brief online wellness questionnaire. An experienced program counselor will review the questionnaire upon its submission and send a personal response over the secure website – including any recommendations for follow-up. No one will have access to your information or identity or know that you have taken this survey unless you voluntarily disclose that information.

Additionally, the following resources are available:
