27th Annual Scientific Day Highlights Autonomic Care and Research
The Department held its 27th Annual Scientific Day on May 15 in the T. Boone Pickens Auditorium of North Campus at UT Southwestern. The theme was “Frontiers in Autonomic Disorders: Innovations in Diagnosis, Treatment, and Rehabilitation,” which drew an excited crowd to learn more.
The Phala Helm Distinguished Lecturer was Tae Hwan Chung, M.D., from the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. He provided a general overview as well as presented a strong case on why the home for POTS diagnosis and treatment should be in physiatry.
Also lecturing that day was Steven Vernino, M.D., Ph.D., from the Neurology Department of UT Southwestern. He updated the audience with diagnostic criteria for POTS and various dysautonomia.
Benjamin Young, Ph.D., from the PM&R Department and Allied Health summarized early data from his research looking into cardiovascular health in people with TBI.
The residents also displayed posters, and three projects were presented in front of the auditorium with topics including:
- Nutritional counseling for spinal cord injury patients
- Vitamin D levels in people with burns
- Opioid usage and weaning in inpatient rehabilitation patients
Casey Salandra, D.O., Imran Murtuza, M.D., and John Hunton, M.D., won the Best Resident Research Award voted by the audience for their work on “Opioid Utilization and Weaning Patterns During Inpatient Rehabilitation.”
