Applicant Information

The UT Southwestern PM&R Residency Program is accepting applications for nine categorical positions in the 2026-27 application cycle.

Residency Application Timeline

  • Sept. 23, 2026: Applications are downloaded for review by the Residency Leadership Team. It is in the best interest of applicants to have their entire application completed by this date. If a component of your application will be delayed, please reach out to us on or before Sept. 23 to let us know why.
  • Oct. 12, 2026: Interview invitations will begin to be extended on a rolling basis.
  • Interview sessions are virtual and last 4-5 hours. Both morning and afternoon sessions will be available from late October through early January to accommodate applicants from different time zones.
  • Resident social events take place in the evenings via Zoom and will occur in the same week as your scheduled interview. Attendance is highly encouraged. You will have a lot of fun with our amazing crew!
  • Second-look opportunities will be available in February 2027. These sessions are organized solely by current residents and will not impact final ranking as they take place after the rank order list is finalized. Faculty members (including the residency leadership team) will not be present. Second-look events are only for applicants to get to know our residents, tour our facilities, and experience our city.

UT Southwestern is committed to a transparent and fair recruitment season.

  • We have a holistic application review process. Each application is reviewed by multiple members of the residency leadership team and scored across 13 diverse domains.
  • Every applicant to our program should submit 3-4 letters of recommendation. We strongly prefer that at least one be a standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE) from a PM&R physician (or group of PM&R physicians). Letter writers can access the SLOE from the Association of Academic Physiatrists website.
  • We look forward to reading your Program Preference Signal Explanations in ERAS this year. We anticipate receiving many preference signals this year, and it will be helpful to know what specifically draws you to our program.
  • We do not use cut-offs for academic performance or board scores.
  • We accept either USMLE or COMLEX examination scores.
  • The only Visa type that UT Southwestern supports is the J1 Visa.
  • For applicants who have already graduated from medical school, we prefer your graduation date to have been within the past 3 years, and that your time after graduation has been spent in further training or scholarly endeavors, but we will accept and holistically review all applications, even if these guidelines have not been met.
  • Approximately 90 applicants will be invited to interview for nine positions. The number of interview invitations will not exceed the number of interview spots.
  • Applicants have 72 hours to schedule their interview and resident social event before the spot is offered to another applicant.
  • Applicants on the wait list will be notified on a rolling basis as interview slots become available.
  • All interview scheduling will be on the Thalamus platform. Interviews will be conducted virtually on Zoom.
  • "Thank You" cards/emails are not required and do not impact our impressio of you. However, if you choose to send a message of thanks, it will be appreciated!
  • We are always happy to answer any questions at any time! Feel free to email Dr. Scott, Terri Isbell, the APDs, or the chief residents. However, out of a desire for fairness and to maintain the integrity of the match, our residency leadership will not initiate any communication with you after your interview. Not even if we love you and are ranking you No. 1!
