Dr. Siyuan Zhang, Associate Professor of Pathology, has received an NIH R01 grant to investigate how metastatic ovarian cancer adapts to tissue microenvironments to form metastasis and develops resistance to chemotherapy. The research will combine single-cell analysis, lineage tracing, and functional genetic screening to follow ovarian cancer cells during metastasis and treatment. The team aims to identify metastatic tumor cell-specific vulnerabilities that could be exploited as more effective strategies for preventing metastatic ovarian cancer or overcoming treatment resistance.

The multidisciplinary team includes UTSW clinicians Diego Castrillon, M.D., Ph.D. and Jayanthi Lea, M.D., who provide clinical and translational insights, and longtime collaborators Drs. Sharon Stack and Jun Li at the University of Notre Dame, who contribute expertise in ovarian cancer biology and bioinformatics, respectively.
