The Pediatric Hematology Laboratory offers testing to aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of blood disorders. In addition to performing routine complete blood counts (CBCs) and differentials on peripheral blood, laboratory personnel are experienced in the evaluation of the cellular content of cerebral spinal fluids, joint fluids, pericardial effusions, and other body fluids.
The pediatric hematology staff have developed a regional referral service for hemoglobinopathies, a diverse group of common, inherited disorders of hemoglobin. The laboratory offers screening and diagnostic tests for the evaluation of patients with disorders involving hemoglobin including Sickle Cell Disease, Beta-thalassemia, and unknown hemoglobin variants. Specialized testing performed includes high performance liquid chromatography/electrophoresis for hemoglobinopathy evaluation, beta globin (HBB) gene sequencing for beta-thalassemia disease severity prognostication and definitive identification of beta globin mutations, and red blood cell pit count assay for evaluation of splenic function.
The Pediatric Coagulation Laboratory offers both routine and highly specialized laboratory services for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with suspected bleeding disorders as well as the monitoring of patients with clotting disorders.
