Laboratory Informatics

Resident RotationResidency Program

Merlyn Sayers

The Laboratory Informatics group consists of six members with appointments in multiple departments and a diversity of subspecialty interests, including bioinformatics, chemistry, data analytics, gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, hematology, hematopathology, machine learning, microbiology, molecular pathology, neuropathology, quality assurance and improvement, referral testing and transfusion medicine. We have four board-certified faculty who oversee and support pathology's information systems and technologies at each of the three hospitals in the Southwestern Medical District. We also have experience in academics, public-private initiatives and software development.

With three, highly-integrated laboratory information systems among the hospitals; two in-house, multi-gene next generation sequencing assays; and health care networks that serve millions of patients with tens of millions of tests annually in one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, our division tackles a wealth of informatics challenges through custom coding efforts, database maintenance and analysis, information governance, the provision of content expertise and research.

We have a core curriculum distributed across our three- and four-year residencies featuring large- and small-group lectures and meeting and project participation. We also offer trainee and medical student electives, which we tailor to participant interests. Feel free to contact our director, Jyoti Balani (jyoti.balani@utsouthwestern.edu) to learn more about our group and what we can offer you.
