Forensic Pathology

UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) Pathology Department is closely affiliated with the Dallas County Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences (SWIFS) and all Medical Examiners hold faculty appointments. SWIFS is located in Dallas, Texas near the UTSW campus and comprises two primary divisions: The Office of the Medical Examiner and the Criminal Investigation Laboratory.

The Office of the Medical Examiner determines the cause and manner of death of approximately 4,200 decedents each year from many north Texas counties. The Criminal Investigation Laboratory provides an impartial source for forensic laboratory analysis and expert scientific consultation and testimony.

The high level of integration of the Medical Examiner's Office, Criminal Investigation Laboratory, and Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern provides numerous opportunities for academic interactions, including conferences, teaching, and research activities. There are two forensic pathology fellowship positions available per academic year as well as resident and student rotations. Regularly scheduled conferences include both gross and microscopic neuropathology, didactic lecture sessions, cardiac pathology, and case review conferences.
