World Voice Day, celebrated every year on April 16, began in Brazil in 1999 as Dia Nacional da Voz (Brazilian National Voice Day). It was launched through the collaborative efforts of laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, and voice teachers within the Brazilian Society of Laryngology and Voice. The goal was simple yet powerful: increase public awareness of the importance of the voice and encourage early recognition of voice problems through education campaigns.

In 2002, the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery officially recognized World Voice Day, transforming it from a national initiative into a global movement. Today, it serves as a platform for otolaryngologists, speech-language pathologists, voice teachers, and other professionals to promote evidence-based prevention strategies and timely evaluation for persistent voice changes.

Why does this matter?

World Voice Day 2026 is an opportunity to strengthen awareness about vocal health and the importance of early intervention. Physicians and clinicians should educate patients, especially high-risk groups like teachers, singers, and older adults, on preventive measures such as staying hydrated, avoiding irritants (smoking, alcohol, caffeine), taking voice breaks, using amplification when needed, and maintaining regular physical exercise (more than three times weekly is linked to lower dysphonia rates).

Celebrate by taking action!

Promote vocal health in your clinic and partner with laryngologists and speech-language pathologists. Even simple steps, such as encouraging hydration and mindful voice use, can make a big difference.

Let's use April 16 to champion vocal health and remind our patients and communities that their voices matter!
