The Department of Family and Community Medicine has participated in numerous training session and workshops that promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the department, while interacting with patients, and community-wide.

Inclusive Team-Building Workshop

For this department-wide workshop, the D.E.I. Committee partnered with Keneshia Colwell from the UTSW Office of Institutional Equity and Access. Participants were lead through several real-world scenarios and worked with their colleagues on issues such vulnerability, workplace civility, connecting across difference, unconscious bias, and growth mindset.

 

Cultural Humility and Unconscious Bias

This workshop, facilitated by resident physicians Dr. Haneen Abdelkhaleq and Dr. Mouctika Paluri, focused on the importance of shifting from cultural competence towards cultural humilty, a lifelong committment to learning about the experiences of others, self awareness and reflection. Participants engaged in group discussions about how cultural and socioeconomic differences can influence interactions with patients. The group also came up with suggestions on how to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion within the department.
 

Unconscious Bias in Healthcare - A Primer and Strategies to Reduce the Impact of Unconscious Bias

 
This workshop for faculty was led by Dr. Quinn Capers, IV, Vice Chair for Diversity and Inclusion, Professor of Internal Medicine, a certified moderator of IB workshops who has trained more than 2,000 physicians and healthcare workers in strategies to mitigate bias in patient care, candidate selection, and other scenarios.
 

Addressing Health Inequities in Clinical Settings

This department-wide session, facilitated by D.E.I. Committee Chair Dr. Victoria Udezi, focused on examining societal and medical contributors to health inequities, highlighting potential for bias and discrimination in health care interactions and race based algorithms, and ended with a discussion on strategies to address health inequities as a department.
 

21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge

 

Anti-Racism Challenge
 

This challenge was adapted from diversity scholar Dr. Eddie Moore's 21-day plan which promotes deeper understanding of race, power, privilege, supremacy and oppression. For 21 days, the participant does one action to further their understanding of power, privilege, supremacy, systemic racism, oppression and equity. The challenge includes suggestions for readings, podcasts, videos, and other media and each day the participant is given a choice to READ, LISTEN or WATCH.

Unconscious Bias 101

This department-wide workshop, facilitated by Dr. Marlette Jackson, was geared toward understanding the root causes and impact of unconscious bias.
