Associate Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive Susan Hernandez, D.N.P., M.B.A., RN, drew inspiration from the historical Angel Oak Tree in South Carolina as she praised nurses for weathering the storms of the past year and staying rooted despite the many challenges they faced.

When her dad suffered a stroke, Dr. Leah Carter Smith witnessed the compassionate care he received in the ICU. That experience convinced Dr. Smith to pursue medicine and become an advocate for patients and families through all stages of their lives as a family medicine physician.

Shadowing a urology team, Dr. Rohit Badia observed a surgery to treat cancer using laser technology and became fascinated. His interest in urology checked all the boxes he was looking for: using emerging technology, performing both quick and complex procedures, and caring for patients with quality-of-life issues.

Unrelated, rare neurological disorders diagnosed in her grandfather and a sister prompted Dr. Kathryn Gallaway to pursue a career in medicine. Those memories of her family members continue to drive her to serve patients and families facing long-term, potentially devastating diagnoses.

On May 6, the fourth annual Health System Celebration of Excellence was held in-person and livestreamed for the benefit of the entire UT Southwestern community. The half-day event highlighted clinical innovations and quality improvements taking place at UTSW, despite the hardships of a pandemic.
