Chief Nurse Executive applauds team for adaptability, commitment

UT Southwestern is providing new hope for older adults who suffer fractures and the complications that can result from those injuries with the new Returning Seniors to Orthopedic Excellence (RESTORE) Program.

The President’s Award for Diversity and Humanism in Clinical Care honors clinical faculty who exemplify the humanistic spirit of patient-centered medicine, both through clinical excellence and in outstanding compassion in the delivery of care.

This year 140 students from the School of Health Professions will earn degrees for Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Master of Rehabilitation Counseling, Master of Radiation Therapy, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, Master of Clinical Nutrition, and Doctor of Physical Therapy. The Class of 2020 marks the largest class of graduates for the School of Health Professions.

I have so many memorable moments, including going into the anatomy lab for the first time, studying in the carrels, learning from Nobel Laureates, and of course, graduation. Another memory that makes me smile is the testing, which was held in the most magnificently orange environment known as Gooch Auditorium. It was the perfect testing environment for someone whose favorite color is orange!

From the beginning, community generosity has fueled UT Southwestern’s achievements. Numerous academic and civic leaders have shaped the University’s vision, but Dr. Edward H. Cary planted the first seed in 1943 when he pitched Dallas philanthropist Karl Hoblitzelle and a coalition of business leaders the idea for a leading medical center in North Texas.

I believe that the faculty at UT Southwestern has a sincere interest in producing the most well-educated clinicians and researchers, and the most diverse. This interest is evidenced every time I have spoken at a pre-med program at the school to a roomful of diverse students from area high schools. The future of medicine and science has much to gain from the inclusion of all groups bringing the best ideas to the table.

UT Southwestern’s School of Health Professions has received a $3.25 million federal grant to provide financial assistance to students in its nationally ranked Physician Assistant Studies Program.

Congratulations to School of Health Professions Class of 2020 award winners. Each year, the School of Health Professions honors exemplary students for academic achievements and leadership. This year, seven students are receiving awards that include the Raul Caetano, M.D., Ph.D., Student Research Award; the Gordon Green, M.D., Student Clinician Award; the Ruth Guy, M.D., Student Leadership Award; and the John Schermerhorn, M.D., Student Service Award.
