Two women from the rural community of Karnack on the banks of Caddo Lake in East Texas are known to multitudes. One is Lady Bird Johnson – the former first lady known for beautifying roadsides with wildflowers. The other is Coltee Mason – a Transporter at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital who is celebrating four decades of improving the atmosphere for patients at UT Southwestern.

For Irene Dougherty, a Research Associate celebrating 35 years at UT Southwestern, the best parts of her job include enjoying time with co-workers while knowing the research can help patients and give hope for a cure.

But ask Steve and Jeanne Seitz about their children, and they’ll proudly declare that all seven of them were born at St. Paul. Plus, they’ve both worked at the same place for 40 years.

Each morning, Jenny Bufkin heads to UT Southwestern from her home in Waxahachie, a commute she has been making for 35 years now. When she started her job in 1983, Ms. Bufkin thought she’d only do it for a couple years and move on to work somewhere closer to home.

Diane Wynne’s priority as Administrative Staff Associate is to keep things moving – in particular to make sure administrators, faculty, and staff in her Department are where they are supposed to be. Managing office schedules is a vital responsibility that has become more cumbersome over time with the growth of the campus in her 40 years of UT Southwestern employment.

After 35 years at UT System institutions – including over 26 years at UT Southwestern – Andrea Gonzales says the friendships she has developed and the challenges of her jobs have been the most rewarding.

While UT Southwestern brings hope to its patients, Dian Polk once needed a little hope of a different kind herself – she got stuck in an elevator at the Paul M. Bass Administrative and Clinical Center.

Pattina Traylor has graced the campus of UT Southwestern with her smile for 35 years. As a Unit Secretary in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), that beam is a much-needed warm welcome for the parents – and babies - who arrive to a Unit constantly flowing with big triumphs and hurdles for tiny warriors.
