Valerie is just one of many community members and businesses across North Texas that have banded together to put needed supplies in the hands of health care workers. Valerie’s “Masks Matter” campaign raised $7,500, including money contributed online, matching funds from a local business, and a personal donation of more than $1,000 from her savings. With the money, she was able to deliver 10,000 surgical masks and 1,200 FFP2 respirator masks on April 24.

The Rheumatic Diseases Division is a leader in researching the causes of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

In an effort to improve treatment for patients with COVID-19, UT Southwestern has established a patient registry with its partner institutions to collect health records of North Texans who have either been treated or tested for the disease.

Dr. David A. Minna, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Rheumatic Diseases Division at UT Southwestern and a pioneer in incorporating musculoskeletal ultrasound into the specialty’s clinical practice, passed away Nov. 5 after an extended battle with cancer. He was 73.

Dr. Richard Medford’s first experience with clinical informatics came as an undergraduate in Canada when he hustled to build a database from paper records of patients who had been screened for SARS during a 2003 outbreak of the virus.

In a nod to the growing importance of biotechnology in medicine, UT Southwestern worked with Lyda Hill Philanthropies and real estate developer J. Small Investments to plan a space to incubate fledgling biotech companies in Dallas.
