Russell Poole, who led his former employer’s IT organization through rapid transition as COVID-19 spread across the country earlier this year, has joined UT Southwestern as its new Chief Information Officer.

Every quarter, we recognize shining stars within our UT Southwestern Health System – employees who provide exceptional patient care, as well as those who stand out in vital supporting roles.

The military helps prepare service members to plan and respond to all kinds of threats and emergencies. In 2020, this skill has been invaluable. For veterans who transitioned to a career at UT Southwestern, that readiness training has guided them in the face of a global threat – the coronavirus crisis.

To increase diversity among UT Southwestern’s researchers and faculty, leaders in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences have instituted a new program that provides mentorship and other resources to early career scientists from minority groups underrepresented in biomedical science.

During a time when people are more physically distanced, UT Southwestern’s Business Resource Groups (BRGs) have emerged as effective outlets for employees to stay engaged across remote locations. The Office of Institutional Equity & Access’ Division of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and BRG leaders realized a need early on to cultivate a sense of connection among employees during the pandemic.

With COVID-19 infections falling, this year’s graduation ceremony for UT Southwestern Medical School will return to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center after a two-year hiatus and will host U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson as its commencement speaker. The ceremony for this year’s 211 Medical School graduates is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12.

Congratulations to the second- and third-quarter 2019 recipients of the Diana and Richard C. Strauss Service Excellence Award, honoring employees who exemplify excellent care and service, professionalism, a positive attitude, dedication to teamwork, dependability, enthusiasm, and compassion for patients, guests, and co-workers. The awards are presented quarterly throughout the calendar year. The following employees were selected for their outstanding care and service during the fourth quarter.

UT Southwestern’s inaugural Future of Medicine Wellness Symposium armed faculty, students, and staff involved in clinical care with critical tools and strategies to bolster their emotional well-being and mitigate burnout.

Dr. Rody Cox is known for his crisp signature bow tie, his pressed white coat, and his memory that holds over 90 years of life experiences. After 31 “wonderful” years at UT Southwestern, and 67 years as an attending physician, Dr. Cox has stopped making rounds and retired.
