Unannotated translation products are widespread in model E. coli Speaker: Scott Saunders, PhD UTSW Distinguished Fellow Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics Abstract: E. coli MG1655 has ~4,300 annotated protein coding genes, and many of these gene products have been studied intensely, leading to foundational advances in molecular and systems biology. Each gene is bounded by a start and stop codon, however, many other start and stop codons are found throughout the genome, forming hundreds of thousands of possible open reading frames (ORFs). Recent work has shown that some unannotated ORFs are translated into detectable polypeptides, but it remains unclear if there are significant numbers of functional protein coding genes left to be discovered in model E. coli. To address this question, we are using our oligo-based genetic method, ORBIT, to construct high throughput, highly targeted mutant libraries that can probe ORFs genome-wide for translation and fitness phenotypes. "Foto Test: Update" Speaker: Belinda Vicioso, M.D. Professor of Internal Medicine Division of Geriatric Medicine UT Southwestern Medical Center About Belinda Vicioso: Originally from New York City, Dr. Vicioso earned her bachelor’s degree from the Colegio Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. She received her medical degree with honors from Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and completed internal medicine residency training at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia and St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey. She received advanced training through a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. She joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1995. Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Vicioso served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the University of Maryland, and Seton Hall University.
