Computational Biology Seminar - Dr. Linda Petzold - UT Southwestern Events Calendar

https://events.utsouthwestern.edu/event/computational-biology-seminar-dr-linda-petzold

The Roles and Consequences of Randomness in Biological Systems Speaker: Linda Petzold, PhD Mehrabian Distinguished Professor Mechanical Engineering & Computer Science\ University of California Santa Barbara Abstract: Stochasticity (randomness) is ubiquitous in biological systems. In the first part of this talk, we will explore some of the ways in which stochasticity arises and is used to advantage by biological systems, at a wide range of scales. We will introduce computational tools to enable modeling of stochastic processes in biological systems. In the second part, we will introduce an approach to infer a model, given the data, via a type of neural network called Neural ODEs. Speaker Bio: Dr. Linda Petzold is currently Distinguished Mehrabian Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Computer Science at the University of California Santa Barbara. She is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and the US National Academy of Sciences, and a …

Systems Biology Lecture Series - Dr. Robbe Goris - UT Southwestern Events Calendar

https://events.utsouthwestern.edu/event/systems-biology-lecture-series-dr-robbe-goris

Inference and introspection in the primate visual system Speaker: Robbe Goris, Ph.D. Abstract: To accomplish goals, humans and other animals must infer properties of the environment in the face of uncertainty and change. I will discuss psychophysical, physiological, and theoretical work from my lab that interrogates the computational principles and neural mechanisms that enable humans and macaque monkeys to do this. I will argue that our visual system represents the environment in a manner that facilitates temporal prediction, that perceptual inference can be directly recognized in neural population activity in the prefrontal cortex, and that our brain keeps track of the uncertainty of perceptual interpretations. Speaker Bio: Robbe Goris is a computational neuroscientist who seeks to understand how neural circuits in the primate brain process visual information and support visually guided behavior. He is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin and uses a combination of b…
