Ethics Grand Rounds: Pediatric Gender Medicine - Evidence and Ethics - UT Southwestern Events Calendar

https://events.utsouthwestern.edu/event/ethics-grand-rounds-pediatric-gender-medicine-evidence-and-ethics

UT Southwestern's Ethics Grand Rounds: Pediatric Gender Medicine: Evidence and Ethics Speaker: Moti Gorin, Ph.D., M.B.E. Associate Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University Abstract: Treatment for pediatric gender dysphoria is controversial, especially in the United States, where the debate is politically polarized. Proponents of hormonal and surgical interventions claim there is strong evidence supporting their use and that it is unethical to deprive patients of the option to access them. Critics point to a weak evidence base, established by systemic reviews of the evidence carried about by researchers in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and Canada, and go onto claim that the interventions do more harm than good. Other researchers maintain that the strength of the scientific evidence is not the most important issue, and what really matters is the right of the patients to make decisions about their own bodies. This presentation will cover some of the central topics of debate in this field of…

Computational Biology Seminar - Dr. Hae Kyung Im - UT Southwestern Events Calendar

https://events.utsouthwestern.edu/event/computational-biology-seminar-dr-hae-kyung-im

Building a DNA sequence to phenotype prediction model by integrating advances in deep learning and statistical genetics Speaker: Hae Kyung Im, Ph.D. Associate Professor at the University of Chicago Committee on Genetics, Genomics and Systems Biology Abstract: Genetic association studies have identified many disease-causing genes, providing valuable insights into potential cures. However, the complex, multifactorial, and polygenic nature of most common diseases presents a significant challenge to further progress. While hundreds of thousands of genomic loci have been linked to various diseases, the mechanisms through which they contribute to disease remain largely unknown. Several predictive methods have been developed to explain the downstream effects of genetic variation. However, the high costs and limited sample sizes often hinder the generation of sufficient data for these methods to be fully effective. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the current state of complex disease genetics, d…
