"Heterochromatin and Mitotic Fragment Tethering in Chromothripsis" Speaker: Amanda Mennie, M.D., Ph.D. Research Fellow Division of Hematology & Oncology UT Southwestern Medical Center About Amanda Mennie: Dr. Mennie holds two bachelor’s degrees, in genetics and biotechnology and in English literature, from the University of Iowa and an M.D./Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Her Ph.D. focused on telomere and telomerase regulation in fission yeast in the lab of Toru Nakamura, Ph.D. She completed internal medicine residency training at UT Southwestern, where she is currently conducting postdoctoral research in hematology and oncology. This in-person event will be held near the D1 area on South Campus, and little nibbles will be available and limited on a first come, first serve basis. "The Complicated Sex Lives of Schistosomes" Speaker: James Collins, Ph.D. Professor and Interim Chair of Pharmacology UT Southwestern Medical Center About James Collins: A Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, Dr. Collins holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Southeast Missouri State University and a doctoral degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Collins studies schistosomes, parasitic flatworms responsible for schistosomiasis, a tropical disease that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. Infection typically occurs through contact with contaminated freshwater, where the parasites penetrate the skin and migrate through blood vessels to organs such as the liver and bladder.
