"Community-Acquired Pneumonia: New Guidelines, Old Controversies" Speaker: Michael Klompas, M.D., M.P.H. Professor of Medicine & Population Medicine Harvard Medical School About Michael Klompas: Dr. Klompas earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto, completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and obtained fellowship training in infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital. He focuses clinically on emerging infectious diseases, pneumonia, and sepsis. He has authored extensive research on the surveillance, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia, ventilator-associated events, and sepsis. His expertise has led to service on multiple national guideline panels, including the ATS–IDSA committee on hospital-acquired pneumonia, the SHEA panel on strategies to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (where he is co-chair), and the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guideline panel. UT Southwestern's Ethics Grand Rounds: Continuous Sedation at the End of Life: When Is It Ethical? Speaker: Joseph A. Raho, Ph.D. Clinical Ethicist at the UCLA Health Ethics Center and Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles Abstract: Continuous sedation is an ethically controversial end-of-life option. Although some clinicians judge it to be consistent with the aims of palliative care, others charge that it constitutes a form of "slow euthanasia" and is thus ethically impermissible. This presentation examines the ethics of continuous sedation as a possible last-resort option for patients experiencing refractory end-of-life symptoms. Following a case study, it first distinguishes end-of-life practices from death-hastening interventions and then moves to analyze problematic uses of sedation.
