Dr. Panitch will discuss how glycosaminoglycans regulate inflammation and highlight new peptide-based therapies designed to restore vascular barrier function, reduce clotting and inflammation, and improve outcomes in conditions like ischemia-reperfusion injury and sickle cell disease. About Dr. Panitch Dr. Panitch received bachelor’s degrees from Smith College in Biochemistry and from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in Chemical Engineering. She completed her Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Duncan will present Neuroimage Analysis in Autism: from Model-Based Estimation to Data-driven Learning. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been shown to be helpful for the study of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This talk will describe the evolution of efforts in this area within our group that carry promise for producing objective biomarkers for ASD, as well as predicting patient response to a behavioral therapy known as Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), using task-based fMRI. Such biomarkers would provide an important step for better understanding the underlying pathophysiology of ASD that could help with objective and personalized diagnosis, provide new targets for development of new treatments, and provide a way to monitor patient progress. The monthly Komen Breast Cancer Research Forum will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9-10am. The Forum is organized by Drs. Heather McArthur, Ariella Hanker, and Qing Zhang to help facilitate information exchange among basic, translational, and clinical investigators with a focus in breast cancer as well as foster interactions between clinicians and scientists. One main objective of this forum is to jointly learn what the institutional assets in breast cancer are so we can make decisions on what we are capable in terms of multi-investigator research grants, clinical trials, mentoring, outreach, and program building. “Toward a Liquid Biopsy for Lupus Nephritis” Speaker: Andrea Fava, M.D. Associate Professor of Medicine Division of Rheumatology Director, Lupus Translational Research Johns Hopkins University About Andrea Fava: Dr. Fava received his medical degree from San Raffaele Medical School in Milan, Italy, and completed internal medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training in rheumatology and in lupus at Johns Hopkins University, followed by a visiting fellowship in computational biology at the Broad Institute. Dr. Fava's research is centered on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), particularly lupus nephritis, with the goal of advancing precision medicine through the integration of immunology, genomics, proteomics, and clinical investigation. She earned her medical degree at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso and completed internal medicine residency training as well as a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at UT Southwestern. Dr. Kypreos joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021. Dr. Kypreos specializes in pulmonology with a subspecialty in interstitial lung disease.
