The monthly Komen Breast Cancer Research Forum will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9-10am. The Forum is organized by Drs. Heather McArthur, Ariella Hanker, and Qing Zhang to help facilitate information exchange among basic, translational, and clinical investigators with a focus in breast cancer as well as foster interactions between clinicians and scientists. One main objective of this forum is to jointly learn what the institutional assets in breast cancer are so we can make decisions on what we are capable in terms of multi-investigator research grants, clinical trials, mentoring, outreach, and program building. This will also inform recruitment needs and areas of investment geared towards establishing and growing a Translational Research Breast Cancer Program based at the Simmons Cancer Center. We are very pleased to announce the second UTSW RNA Biology and Therapy Symposium, to be held on April 23, 2026, in the NG3 lecture hall and atrium. After the highly successful symposium that was held in 2024, we are extremely excited to once again provide this opportunity to bring together all faculty, trainees, and staff who are interested in basic and translational aspects of RNA biology and to highlight the excellence in this area of research at our institution. We are also thrilled that Anastasia Khvorova, Ph.D. from UMass Chan Medical School, a leader in the development of RNA therapeutics, will deliver a keynote lecture. Join the Department of Biomedical Engineering on Monday, August 17 for a Distinguished Seminar Series featuring Alyssa Panitch, Chair of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University. Dr. Panitch will discuss how glycosaminoglycans regulate inflammation and highlight new peptide-based therapies designed to restore vascular barrier function, reduce clotting and inflammation, and improve outcomes in conditions like ischemia-reperfusion injury and sickle cell disease. About Dr. Panitch Dr. Panitch received bachelor’s degrees from Smith College in Biochemistry and from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in Chemical Engineering. She completed her Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and University of Zurich.
