UTSW has been tackling COVID-19 from every angle. Nearly 300 research projects have been launched, ranging from basic understanding of the virus and its effects on the body to drug screening, clinical trials, social and behavioral aspects, and more. UTSW has been vaccinating the general public since early February and expanded sites to include underserved communities in southern Dallas. Among the numerous different clinical trials underway at UTSW is one testing the efficacy of a drug called atovaquone, which was discovered by three UTSW basic researchers to potentially have antiviral properties against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
