Overview

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Our mission is to provide a stimulating research environment for scientists at every career stage. We seek to train and motivate individuals who will shape the future of science. With a historical focus centered on the general area of signal transduction, our Department encompasses a multidisciplinary group of researchers who are exploring unique ways to answer questions in biology at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level.

I invite you to take a peek inside of our Department’s web pages and explore some of the cool science that is going on. Whether it is characterizing new pharmacologic targets to cure diseases like cancer, malaria, and obesity, or it is working out new computational methods to understand the evolutionary design of cellular signaling networks, you’ll find a rich diversity of model systems from bacteria to humans, many of which are being studied in a highly collaborative atmosphere that crosses several clinical and basic science departments, a singularly unique experience at UT Southwestern.

My goal is to ensure that our faculty, postdocs, students, and staff have the opportunity to excel and compete at the highest level. Along the way, we intend to have fun doing some kick-ass science.

– David J. Mangelsdorf, Ph.D., Chair, Department of Pharmacology

About the Department

The Department of Pharmacology is housed in the T. Boone Pickens Biomedical Building on the North Campus of UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The Department is composed of more than 25 primary tenure-track faculty members, including one Nobel laureate and three National Academy of Sciences members. Our faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students are engaged in research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the State of Texas, the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas, and several private organizations.

We are actively involved in biomedical research areas that span a broad range of approaches, from integrative physiology and metabolism to molecular pharmacology and systems biology. The Department is also committed to training students from UT Southwestern Graduate School, UT Southwestern Medical School, and UT Southwestern School of Health Professions.
