Physician Scientist Training Program – FAQs

If one is currently in a residency training program, when is the optimum time to apply for a position in the PSTP?

There is no formal deadline. We encourage candidates to apply as soon as they feel a firm commitment.

Must I formally enroll in graduate school during the research component of my fellowship?

No; however, you may audit selected graduate school courses.

Do I need to be nominated for the PSTP?

Yes. The Chair for the UT Southwestern Medical Center department in which you will train must write a nominating letter.

Is prior laboratory-based research experience a prerequisite for admission?

Prior research experience is desirable but not required.

Can the research time be broken up into three six-month blocks?

No.

Can fellows moonlight during the research years of their training?

Moonlighting is discouraged. Exceptions will be decided by the fellowship director and the scientific mentor.

Are fellows required to obtain a Texas medical license?

Yes.

How much clinical work is allowed during the period of research training?

A small amount of clinical work is allowed during the research years. The precise amount varies by subspecialty.

Will fellows receive health care coverage?

Yes. The UT Southwestern group insurance options are available to PSTP fellows.
