Department History

Clinical Sciences officially became a UT Southwestern Medical Center academic department on January 1, 2006. It had previously served the University as the Center for Biomedical Statistics and Clinical Science, which in turn had its original roots in the University’s old Academic Computing Systems group. The change to department status was prompted by the award of a $9.7 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grant to the Center.

The Department continued the Center’s development of a formal training program for new clinical researchers and oversaw UT Southwestern’s application for one of the NIH’s large Clinical and Translational Science Award grants.

The application met with success in 2007 and the department has grown significantly in number of faculty and staff, in the development of clinical scientist training programs, and in conducting research studies in areas such as community-based health and cancer prevention.
