Registration Instructions

UT Southwestern provides all required Conflict of Interest (COI) Training as a web-based tutorial through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).

Each Covered Individual* must complete COI Training before engaging in research at UT Southwestern Medical Center and at least once every four years thereafter. A Covered Individual new to UT Southwestern must complete the training before engaging in research, or must provide evidence of having completed the training at another UT System institution within the last four years. COI training must be completed immediately if it is found that the Covered Individual is not in compliance with this policy or a management plan, or if the policy is revised in a manner that affects the Covered Individual’s duties.

*Covered Individual – Any person who is required to submit a Statement of Financial Interest and Outside Activities, including: faculty members; exempt UT Southwestern employees, study team members (including students and post-graduate trainees); individuals who may influence the negotiation or execution of research or technology licensing agreements; Institutional Review Board (IRB) members; Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) members; and Conflict of Interest Committee (COI Committee) members.

Please note that COI training for non-faculty, non-research personnel is covered in the Institutional Compliance Training that is required every two years. These individuals are not required to complete the CITI COI training.

After finishing the required training(s), please keep a copy of each document for your records.

Training Instructions for First Time CITI Users:

UT Southwestern Employees

Faculty or staff who has an active person number and a Southwestern ID
Note: The CITI Course site is best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox.

1. Go to the CITI Course website

2. If you are a new user, click on “Register.” This will open a new window that contains the registration form.

3. Complete steps 1-7 of the CITI – Learner Registration.
Fields marked with an * are required fields:

  • Select your institution or organization. Important: Select “University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center” in order to view our courses.
  • Enter Personal Information. Important: Use your full name. Providing a nickname or an abbreviated name may cause delay in verifying your training. Enter your email address. Important: Use your UT Southwestern email address as your preferred address, if applicable.
  • Create your Username and Password. Important: You will create your own user name and password (similar to creating a new personal email account). If you have a UT Southwestern email address, you must use this email as your Username. Choose a Security Question and Security Answer.
  • Indicate Gender, Ethnicity, and Race. (Required)
  • Indicate whether you are interested in CEU credit, and whether CITI Program may contact you at a later date. (Required)
  • Enter Institutional email address, Gender, Department, Role in Research, Office Phone, Job Title, Mail Code, and Date of Birth. (Required)
  • Select Curriculum. For COI training, please skip Question 1 and select "Yes" under Question 2 indicating you wish to take the UT Southwestern COI training. Note: If you will be involved in human and/or animal research, you may also check the corresponding training groups in Question 1 to access additional training modules.

1. Go to the CITI Course website

2. Enter your User Name and Password.

NOTE: If you forget your Username or Password, go to “Forgot Username or Password?” on the CITI Homepage to retrieve the information.

Other Affiliates

1. Go to the CITI Course website

2. If you are a new user, click on “Register” and follow the instructions above for First Time CITI Users. If you are a Returning CITI User affiliated with another institution, log in with your Username and Password.

3. On the Main Menu, click on “Click here to affiliate with another institution”.

4. Click on “Click here to affiliate with another institution” (again). IMPORTANT: You must select “University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center” as the Participating Institution to view the appropriate courses.

5. Click “Next” and provide the information requested by University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

When all steps are complete, you will receive confirmation, “Your registration with University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is complete.”

To sign in again later:

1. Go to the CITI Course website

2. Enter your User Name and Password.

NOTE: If you forget your Username or Password, go to “Forgot Username or Password?” on the CITI Homepage to retrieve the information.

Training Instructions for Returning CITI Users:

1. Go to the CITI Course website

2. Enter your User Name and Password. NOTE: If you have forgotten your Username or Password, go to “Forgot Username or Password?” on the CITI Homepage to retrieve the information.

3. Click University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Courses, and select “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups” (under My Learner Tools for University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center). Skip Question 1 and select "Yes" under Question 2 indicating you wish to take the UT Southwestern Conflict of Interest training.
