Health Watch - Family Matters: Relaxation

Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about medical issues related to starting a family. Trying to conceive a baby can be stressful, especially if you have to undergo fertility testing and treatment. But there are ways to ease the anxiety.

Couples going through fertility treatment can deal with their stress by trying relaxation techniques like listening to soothing music, taking yoga classes or even undergoing acupuncture treatment. Dr. Ellen Wilson, a reproductive specialist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says this helps patients manage the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. It’s not clear if anxiety affects the outcome of fertility treatment, but it can influence how prepared couples are to receive an infertility diagnosis and complete the treatment. Doctors may provide patients with counseling services in addition to medical treatment.
