Health Watch — Getting Away: Creative Vacations

Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about getting away from it all during summer vacation season. Previously, we discussed the importance of vacations for renewing your mind and body. But with today’s soaring gas prices, how can you afford a vacation?

Dr. Ann Matt Maddrey, a psychologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you can get the benefits of a vacation without leaving home, with a little creativity. She suggests thinking of the kind of vacation you want — your dream vacation — and finding ways to recreate that at home. Home is a safe place and a haven, so it’s a good place to rest and recharge. The important thing to do to create that vacation mindset is to break from your usual routine so you can see the world in a different way.
