Heatlh Watch -- Thanksgiving: Cranberries

It’s Thanksgiving, time for family, feasting and food. This week on Health Watch, we’ve got some tips on what to eat and how to serve it to keep your family healthy.

Cranberries are a traditional Thanksgiving food - whether served as a relish, in cranberry sauce or as cranberry juice. Cranberry juice has a lot of health benefits. It’s believed that cranberry juice helps prevent bladder infections, but doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say there may be a limit to its effectiveness. In a study, they found that drinking a liter or more of cranberry juice a day raises the risk for developing urinary stones. Dr. Margaret Pearle, a UT Southwestern urologist, says this doesn’t mean you have to give up cranberry juice. Just drink fewer than four glasses of it a day.
