Newsmakers – Commencement 2013
Dr. David Pistenmaa, Professor of Radiation Oncology, was honored at a March 14 dinner for his years of leadership and to celebrate the elevation of an endowed position bearing his name. Established in 2005, the David A. Pistenmaa, M.D., Ph.D., Distinguished Professorship in Radiation Oncology is now a Distinguished Chair held by Dr. David Chen, Professor of Radiation Oncology. At the event, Dr. Pistenmaa, who holds the David Bruton Jr. Professorship in Clinical Cancer Research, was presented with a wooden chair symbolizing the honor and a scroll by UT Southwestern Medical Center President Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky. Dr. Pistenmaa headed the Department of Radiation Oncology from 1996 to 2003.
Dr. Vanessa Sperandio, Professor of Microbiology and Biochemistry, recently was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Her research is directed toward understanding how bacteria recognize the host and using that knowledge to interfere with bacterial infections. She was inducted May 21 at the 113th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology in Denver.
