Dr. John Hart, professor of neurology and psychiatry, has been named to an advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The 14-member committee will advise the secretary on health care and benefits for veterans of the 1990-1991 Gulf War. The group is scheduled to provide a report in 18 months.
Dr. Hart is past president of the Society for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology and the Behavioral Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology, and also is a professor of behavioral and brain sciences at UT Dallas, as well as medical science director of the Center for BrainHealth.
Dr. Roger Unger, professor of internal medicine and holder of the Touchstone/West Distinguished Chair in Diabetes Research, has been elected an honorary member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. The former director of the Touchstone Center for Diabetes Research, Dr. Unger has investigated diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance for more than 50 years.
He has received the association's Claude Bernard Medal, considered one of the premier honors in diabetes research, as well as the Banting Medal from the American Diabetes Association, the Fred Conrad Koch Award from the Endocrine Society, and the David Rumbaugh Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Dr. Unger is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
