Supporting translational research by providing investigators with fresh, frozen or fixed tissue and fluid samples, and with associated data and support services.
This shared resource provides specimen procurement and ancillary services to UT Southwestern Medical Center investigators. The Tissue Management resource includes three labs with an extensive collection of equipment to facilitate tissue-based research.
Samples available to researchers include over 5,000 tissue and 15,000 blood biospecimens. Departments involved to date include Breast Oncology, Cancer Genetics, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Otolaryngology, Surgical Oncology, and Urology.
All tissues collected by the Tissue Management resource are reviewed by pathologists to verify the diagnosis and determine the percentage of tumor nuclei and necrosis present in the specimen. Archived specimens are either snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen or preserved as formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. The Tissue Management resource also collects serum, plasma and buffy coat blood samples.
If you would like to request biospecimens, please contact Cheryl Lewis at firstname.lastname@example.org. All requests are reviewed by a panel of experts before samples can be released.
DNA and RNA fractions can be isolated from frozen samples for use in the molecular analysis of cancer pathogenesis. Laser capture microdissection of tissue sections is offered for investigators wishing to isolate specific cells within a tissue sample for further analysis.
