Faculty Research Bio

Dr. Euhus’ primary research interests are in the areas of cancer genetics, breast cancer risk assessment and breast cancer prevention. In collaboration with the BayesMendel Group at Johns Hopkins University, he continues to develop his CancerGene program, a software suite for cancer risk assessment and counseling with a special focus on inherited cancer syndromes. His laboratory is actively engaged in identifying markers in breast tissue that could be used to identify women at high risk for breast cancer or that could be used as surrogate endpoints in prevention trials. Most recently his work has focused on DNA methylation, a chemical change in DNA that inappropriately turns off important tumor suppressor genes. These changes are being evaluated in breast cells obtained from high risk women by nipple duct lavage or fine needle aspiration biopsy. Markers of proliferation, programmed cell death and gene expression are also being evaluated as part of a multi-institutional National Cancer Institute-funded chemoprevention trial for which he serves as the principal investigator. His research group is currently exploring mammographic density as a potential marker of breast cancer risk and a potential surrogate endpoint for prevention trials. The ultimate goal of the research program is to discover ways to prevent breast cancer in women who are at high risk for the disease.

Faculty Personal Bio

Dr. Euhus received his B.S. (cum laude) from Colorado State University and his M.D. from St. Louis University Medical School. He performed an internship, surgical residency and surgical oncology fellowship at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He served as a surgical oncologist in the U.S. Army for five years, with his last assignment at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. He has been a faculty member at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas since 1996. Dr. Euhus' research interests are in breast cancer risk measurement and prevention. He is Co-Director of the Mary L. Brown Breast Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment Clinic in the U.T. Southwestern Center for Breast Care. He is also The Marilyn R. Corrigan Distinguished Chair in Breast Cancer Surgery. He is the author of the popular CancerGene software program which is used for genetic risk assessment in more than 1100 cancer centers worldwide. His laboratory, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, investigates molecular markers of breast cancer risk in benign breast cells from high-risk women.
