Faculty Appointments — Drs. Brauer, Smith, Ye

Kirk Brauer, M.D., has been named assistant professor of anesthesiology and pain management at UT Southwestern. Dr. Brauer, who will work in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, recently completed his anesthesiology internship and residency at the UT Medical Branch Galveston, where he was chief resident. Before that, he was part of the investigational intensive care unit in anesthesiology at UT Medical Branch. Dr. Brauer's research interests include fluid kinetics, ischemic preconditioning, reperfusion injury and ca-channel blockers. In 1999 he published a book chapter on the application of kinetic principles to intravenous fluid therapy.

A native of San Diego, Dr. Brauer graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, San Diego, in 1990 with a degree in bioengineering. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University at Luebeck, Germany, in 1998.

Troy Smith, M.D., recently joined the UT Southwestern faculty as an assistant professor of radiology. Prior to coming to UT Southwestern, Dr. Smith was in private practice at Diagnostic Radiology Associates of Dallas.

Dr. Smith, a native of Paris, Texas, attended Southern Methodist University where he received his undergraduate degree before entering Southwestern Medical School and receiving his medical degree in 1971. He completed his radiology residency and internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Jin Ye, Ph.D., recently joined the UT Southwestern faculty as an assistant professor of molecular biophysics and molecular genetics. After receiving a master's degree in biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Ye earned his doctorate in cell regulation from UT Southwestern in 2000.

Until his appointment as assistant professor, he was a postdoctoral research fellow working under Nobel laureates Drs. Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein. Dr. Ye's research focuses on the structure and function of proteins and mechanics involved in cholesterol regulation.
